… As APC commends passage

BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – After 12 years of rigmarole, foot dragging and party and regional politics, the Senate on Thursday passed the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill. The Petroleum Industry Governance Bill is the first part out of the three Bills the Senate segmented the entire Bill to for easy passage.

The bill is expected to introduce reforms that would ensure greater transparency and accountability in the Nigerian oil and gas industry as well as drive the key indicators along with other stakeholders in the petroleum sector by ensuring more efficiency, addressing environmental issues and community interests.

The Bill is equally expected to take care of the interest of both Nigerians and its investors.

The PIGB, 2017 (SB. 237) was read for the 3rd time and passed by the Senate through a unanimous voice votes.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki said after its passage that; “We are proud of what has been done.”

The passed Bill would be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence before sending it to the president for assent.

Meanwhile, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the Senate on the passage of the historic Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which seeks to introduce reforms that would ensure greater transparency and accountability in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

The party however noted that the bill had languished in the various chambers of the National Assembly for about 12 years but it took the purposeful and dedicated APC-led Senate to pass it.

We are very excited that the bill was passed today after about 12 years delay.  We specially commend the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki for his focused leadership of the 8th Senate, which has produced several legislative actions that have positively affected the lives of Nigerians, promoted good governance and advanced on-going efforts by the APC-led administration to rebuild the Country.

A statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi said the passage of the bill is an indication that the federal legislators are diligent and reform-minded, and are committed to fulfilling the promises the party made to Nigerians.

Abdullahi further said; “We call on the House of Representatives under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara to follow the example of the Senate by also promptly passing the PIB.”

The APC called on Nigerians to continue to support and cooperate with the President Muhammadu Buhari APC-led administration and the National Assembly as they continue to make laws and execute projects to improve the well being of Nigerians.
