COVID-19: NCDC Confirms 1,074 Fresh Cases, 5 Deaths On New Year Day


BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – As the second wave of COVID-19 continues to bare its deadly fangs across the country, Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) late on Friday confirmed 1,074 new cases of the virus.

The Centre reported on its official website that; “On the 1st of January 2021, 1,074 new confirmed cases and five (5) deaths were recorded in Nigeria.”

It further stated that; “Till date, 88,587 cases have been confirmed; 74373 cases have been discharged; and 1,294 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

All the statistics recorded by NCDC covers the period from February 27, 2020 when the first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported in the country till date.

Giving a breakdown of the 1074 new cases are reported from 15 states of the Federation as at Friday night, the disease control outfit credited Lagos with – (642); Kaduna – (92); Rivers – (78); and FCT – (66).

Other state on the list are: Gombe – (66), Kano – (35), Ogun – (31), Katsina – (22), Plateau – (20), Abia – (7), Niger – (4), Oyo – (4), Akwa Ibom – (3), Delta – (2), and Osun – (2)

According to NCDC; “A multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, continues to coordinate the national response activities” as part of measures to curb the virus spread in Nigeria
