COVID-19 Update: NCDC Battles Spiraling Numbers, Records 779 New Cases

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – The spiraling numbers of new infections from states are fast confirming fears expressed by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 that community transmission of the virus poses grave danger to the health of most Nigerians.
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the last 24 hours threw up a worrying figure of 779 new cases with four (4) deaths in the country.
Confirming the disturbing development on its official twitter handle, the NCDC said with no new state reporting a case as at late Saturday night, June 27, 2020, statistics on total number of cases indicate that Nigeria currently has a total of 24,077 cases to deal with.
The Centre said on June 27, 2020, from the tally of 24,077 confirmed cases, 8,625 patients have been successfully treated and discharged from various Isolation centres across the country.
It further reported that the fatality figure now stands at 558 deaths recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Giving a breakdown of the 779 new cases that came in from 22 states, the NCDC said Lagos as the epicentre recorded – (285), Rivers – (68), FCT – (60), Edo – (60), Enugu – (56), Delta – (47), Ebonyi – (42), Oyo – (41), and Kaduna – (19)
Others states that made the list are: Ogun – (18), Ondo – (16), Imo – (12), Sokoto – (11), Borno – (9), Nasarawa – (8), Abia – (5), Gombe – (5), Kebbi – (5), Kano – (4), Yobe (3), Ekiti(3), Osun – (2)
