Adamawa United players – Not the best of times

BY AUSTIN AJAYI, YOLA – Unknown gunmen have attacked players and officials of Adamawa United Football Club travelling for their week 11 Nigerian Professional Football league (NPFL) fixture against hosts, MFM Football Club in Lagos.

Reports said the team members was robbed at gun point around Benin-Ore Expressway on Friday night at about 11.45pm.

In the attack that reportedly lasted for more than 40 minutes, the criminals disposed the team of their valuables that included handsets, monies and other unspecified personal belongings.

In the ensuing confusion, the Club’s driver was reportedly abducted by the gun-wielding criminals and as at press time, there was still no information on his possible whereabouts.

One of the players, Sadiq Lawan, who witnessed the incident, said the attack took place at about 11.30pm along the notorious Benin-Ore Express.

According to him; “About eight of them (gunmen) came out from the bush and started shooting into the air. They ordered us out of the vehicle; took our money and phones.

“It was later we found out that our driver was taken away. We then came back to Benin City and took refuge at a checkpoint.”

“The coach then had to go and lodge a report at the police station. But I don’t know if the Edo FA has been contacted”, the traumatized player was quoted as saying.

As at the time of filling this report, the Club was yet to release an official statement on the incident.

Spirited efforts at contacting the Club’s Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Zira to confirm any further development on the incident did not yield results as calls to his mobile numbers were not answered.

However, the Permanent Secretary in the Adamawa State Ministry of Youths and Sports, Alhaji Aliyu Jada, who confirmed the attack, disclosed that the kidnappers have already contacted the Team Manager on the fate on the missing driver.

He said the gunmen have given the Club 24 hours to produce N20 million in order to secure the release of their kidnapped driver.

Alhaji Aliyu Jada however threw up some contradictions with the explanation that the robbery incident took place early in the morning around 6.30 and not 11:45pm as contained in the said player’s narratives
