COVID-19 Update: NCDC Confirms 626 New Cases, Tally Now 27,110

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – The death of Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Wahab Adegbenro on Thursday, July 2, 2020 highlighted the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reports that with 626 new cases, the country’s coronavirus tally has now risen to 27,110 infections.
Adegbenro died of COVID-19 complications at the state Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Akure, Ondo State capital, a day after Governor Rotimi Akeredolu tested positive for the virus.
However, confirming Nigeria’s latest COVID-19 statistics in a tweet on Thursday night, the NCDC said; “On the 2nd of July 2020, 626 new confirmed cases and 13 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.”
The Centre further stated that; “Till date, 27110 cases have been confirmed, 10801 cases have been discharged and 616 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.”
Of the 626 new cases reported from 20 states, NCDC’s
statistics shows that Lagos recorded 193 cases, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 85 cases with Oyo at 41; Edo – 38; and Kwara – 34
Other states listed on the reported cases chart are: Abia – (31); Ogun – (29); Ondo – (28); Rivers – (26); Osun – (21); Akwa Ibom – (18); Delta – (18); Enugu – (15); Kaduna – (13), Plateau – (11), Borno – (8); Bauchi – (7); Adamawa – (5); Gombe – (4); and Sokoto – (1)
Globally, the latest figures published by John Hopkins University indicate that 10,780,980 cases have been detected, with 518,121 deaths and 5,528,887 people already recovered from the deadly virus.
Reporting on Africa, the University said South Africa has about 159,333 cases with 2,749 deaths while latest figures in Ghana showed 18,134 confirmed cases with the fatality figure put at 117 deaths
