Gully Erosion Threatens Tambari Estate, ATP, Wuntin Dada Areas Of Bauchi

…Residents appeal for urgent steps to salvage situation 

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Unless urgent steps are taken by government agencies particularly the Bauchi State Development Board (BSDB), residents of Tambari Housing Estate as well as parts of the Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATP) and other settlements along the stream that runs through Wuntin Dada, a suburb of the state capital would be cut off following gully erosion that is seriously threatening the safety of lives and properties.

As a result of the possible danger, the affected people have sent a “save our Souls”” message to the state and federal governments to as a matter of urgency come to their aid before they are rendered homeless with the rains.

One of the residents of the area, Mr Musa Balarabe, told Forefront News that the gully erosion has become a serious threat to them more than ever before, adding that they have drawn the attention of government to it through the relevant agencies but no action has been taken to control it.

Balarabe further said that the erosion is getting worse owing to the stream that run through the area which is making the current of the water flow stronger especially during the raining season.

Another resident of the area, Mr Matthew Rauf lamented that unless something urgent is done to control the erosion, they may be forced out of their homes

Leader of the area, Abdullahi Shayibu as well as the Ward heads of Tambari Phase 1 and 2, Dr U.U Ningi and Nuuman Umar noted that the erosion has continued to pose a great threat and danger to the area every rainy season forcing them to have sleepless nights.

The community leaders therefore implored the state and federal governments to take steps to tackle the erosion menace which is being worsened by a stream known as ‘Rafin Tambari’ that splashes and invades the land during raining periods.

According to the ward heads; “The erosion is threatening the whole estate and getting worse in recent times as plots of lands and houses are submerged annually due to the large volume of water that passes through.

The residents appealed to the state government to source funds from the federal government under the Ecological funds to embark on a project that could save the area from the environmental hazard.
