BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Amidst disturbing reports of insecurity and incessant kidnapping activities around its vicinity, the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) management has assured of new measures to scale up security around the reference medical institution located in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

To fast track these laudable efforts, the UCTH management has received support from the Nigeria Police with Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in-charge of Zone 6, Musa Kimo pledging his readiness to partner the hospital on a 24 hour- surveillance and patrol.

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UCTH, Professor Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, who dropped the hint at a Thanksgiving Service and Town Hall meeting with UCTH management and staff, said the decision to focus on constant Power Supply in the hospital is part of measures aimed at achieving its set targets at improved services and internal security

According to him, the Teaching Hospital now operates 24 hours power supply to critical areas, such as operational theatres, radiology department, casualty and emergency wards to not only enhance efficiency in its service delivery but also aid surveillance and general security.

Prof Ikpeme noted that before assuming office as CMD in April 2019, the epileptic power situation in UCTH was a serious cause for concern as surgical cases were unfortunately cancelled at short notice while patients’ investigations were largely hampered, leading to avoidable lost of lives in some instances.

He however said to fix these lapses that painted a poor image of UCTH, the management immediately embraced the viable option of improved power situation by procuring a new 500KVA sound proof generator that proved to be a life saver for the hospital and its patients.

The CMD said with an operational management mantra of “Rebuild, Restore and Reboot”, a lot has so far been achieved, even as he lauded the staff for their support and keeping pace with the management’s working tempo and orientation

Prof Ikpeme assured that staff welfare will always be given priority attention by management to motivate them for improved and effective service delivery.

Speaking on effective pharmaceutical service delivery, Prof Ikpeme said drugs and medical consumables supplies have improved remarkably, adding that the hitherto out-of-stock syndrome which UCTH was notorious has now become a thing of the past.

He stated that efforts at ensuring UCTH offer quality services to its patients have also been demonstrated in the management’s engagement of reputable companies to supply all their pharmaceutical needs.

The CMD appreciated the Zone 6 Police high Command for offering support through effective collaboration to ensure safety of lives and property within the hospital.

Some stakeholders at the Town Hall meeting expressed happiness that within nine months of taking over affairs at UCTH, the Prof Ikpeme-led management team has worked hard to reposition the reference medical facility on a pedestal that would enable it compete favourably with others within and outside the country if the momentum is sustained.
