The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed wife over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after consuming a meal she prepared for him.

Available reports indicated that the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, 23rd January 2026, at about 1700hrs at Gauza village in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, who confirmed the incident, said the deceased reportedly took his lunch at home before he suddenly fell seriously ill.

SP Adam, in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital, on Saturday, disclosed that the man was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving attention.

Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Division swung into action and arrested the deceased’s wife as the principal suspect.

According to the Command’s Spokesperson, “during interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison”, adding that the “suspect claimed she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in committing the act.”

SP Adam said the suspect reportedly lamented that her parents forced her into the marriage, a development that she claimed led to her deadly actions.

Speaking further on the incident, the Command’s Spokesperson disclosed that the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse.

He said when the investigation is concluded, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

This is as the Command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while always seeking lawful means of resolving family and marital disputes.

While advising individuals against taking laws into their hands, SP Adam noted that “such actions often result in irreversible consequences.”

He assured the public of the Police’s commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state, saying: “The police will ensure that justice is served in this case.”

On the newlywed’s whereabouts, the PPRO said: “the suspect is currently in police custody, awaiting trial.”
