Lagos COVID-19 Mortality Cases Hit 200 Mark
Africa records 23,265 deaths; 1,048,821 cases
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – The Lagos State Government confirmed on Monday, August 10, 2020 that fatality figures of cironavirus (COVID-19) related deaths in the state have risen to 200 since the pandemic broke out in the country.
State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, said the total of #COVID-19 related deaths so far recorded now stands at 200. The number is however seven (7) more the latest figure of 193 deaths released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as at late on Monday night
Abayomi, who stated the figures on his Twitter account on Monday while giving the state’s COVID-19 update, said, 71 new COVID-19 infections were confirmed out of a total of 844 COVID-19 tests conducted in the state on the day under review.
However, as at Monday, August 10, 2020, the number of Laboratory confirmed cases stood at 15,957; those on admission 2,642; treated and discharged cases -13,122 and deaths 200
The Commissioner also disclosed that 11,860 of the confirmed cases monitored in communities by #COVID-19 Lagos Response Team have either fully recovered or positively responding to treatment.
According to him,. 68 of the cases are currently under isolation in public and private care centres” across the state
Hinting on current challenges in managing the COVID-19 pandemic in the South West State, the Health Commissioner said that 1,400 active cases in communities were yet to turn up for admission in the state’s COVID-19 care centres for treatment.
Meanwhile. reports from the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Region indicate that the continent currently has about 1,048,821 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
This figure includes over 730,000 discharged cases with the fatality numbers put at 23,258 deaths since the pandemic broke out in the country early this year.
Additional reports from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) showed that the five countries reporting most cases are South Africa (559,858); Egypt (95,492); Nigeria (46,867); Ghana (41,003); and Algeria (35,214).
Also, of the 23,265 deaths reported in the continent, the five countries reporting most deaths are South Africa (10,408); Egypt (5,009); Algeria (1,302); Nigeria (950); and Sudan (773)
