BY AHMED TUKUR, LAFIA – The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has made a strong demand for the conduct of Local Government election into the 13 local government councils of the State at the expiration of the tenure of the present local government officials.
The tenure of the present local government elected officials is expected to expire in May 2021.
The State legislators demand was premised upon a motion under Matters of Public interest moved by Hon. Ibrahim Alkali representing Lafia North, who said that the tenure of the present executive at the local government expires May 2021, saying that it is only right to draw the attention of the executive on the need to put in motion the process for the conduct of election into the third tier of government.
Alkali noted that various court judgments including that of the Supreme Courts have declared Caretaker Committee at the Local Government level unconstitutional.
He therefore urged the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) to fast track preparation for the conduct of Local Government elections ahead of the expiration of the present elected officials.
The motion was moved few minutes after the Leader of the House, Hon. Umar Tanko Tunga (Awe south) presented an executive bill “for a law to amend the Nasarawa state law for the establishment, structure,
composition finance of Local Government system in the state”.
Alkali said that the motion becomes imperative to avoid legal implication that will make it difficult for the Councils to operate, adding that there is no provision for Caretaker in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He added that it is only proper for the executive arm of government to do the needful and ensure a smooth transition to a democratically elected administration at the third tier of government.
Alkali explained that section 7 subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution as amended provided for democratically elected officials at the Local
Government level.
Seconding the motion, the member representing Kokona East State constituency, Hon. Daniole Oga Ogazi said that the motion is timely and urged other members of the House to support the motion to ensure that democracy thrives in the state.
