BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State of trading loyalty for political expediency, warning that he is doomed to experience the wrath of those who trusted him with their votes.
According to the NNPP, “History has consistently shown that those who trade loyalty for expediency, and honour for deceit, rarely escape the judgment of the people.”
The Party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which made the declaration in a statement issued on Saturday, described Governor Yusuf’s decision as a betrayal of the political trust placed on him by supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The statement, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the Governor’s claim that the NNPP was suffering an “irredeemable crisis,” was an after thought.
While insisting that the NNPP remained stable and operational, the statement said recent internal and electoral milestones are proofs that the Party is not in any form of collapse as claimed by Governor Yusuf.
The party reminded the public that its leadership structures had recently been renewed through congresses held across the country, beginning from the ward level and culminating in a national convention held on December 20, 2025.
The NNPP’s Spokesperson said it is important to mention that Governor Yusuf was fully on ground during the event which also attracted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) .
However, NNPP reminded the Governor that historically, the people of Kano have always rejected such a wave of defection, pointing out that Governor Abubakar Rimi lost the 1983 governorship election to Mallam Aliyu Sabo Bakin Zuwo, while the bulk of lawmakers who followed him reportedly failed to secure re-election.
The statement said time will surely tell with the 2027 general elections presenting the acid test for all ‘betrayers’ in the nation’s political space.
