A Peruvian bishop, Ciro Quispe López, 51, has been forced to resign his calling after being accused of having 17 secret mistresses.
The development followed a free for all fight by Nun, Lawyer and other mistresses totalling 17 in number believed to be in love with the bishop.
The resignation of López, who was the bishop of Juli in Peru, a respected position in the Catholic Church, came after a Vatican investigation revealed the women nearly fought each other when they found out about his affairs.
The scandal has expectedly, drawn attention to abuse of power and secret affairs within the Church in Peru.
A Peruvian journalist, Paola Ugaz said in an interview with The Times that a nun who was one of Quispe López’s lovers was jealous of a lawyer the bishop was also seeing and sent information about his affairs to a third lover who got into a fight with the lawyer.
According to Ugaz; “It was a real soap opera but also lifted the lid on a serious abuse of power. Many of the 17 women were too scared to come forward because they were frightened of him”.
The bishop’s secret affairs exposed by cleaning lady that he reportedly got exposed after accidentally sending photos and videos meant for his mistresses to his cleaning lady, who then complained to the Church.
Following the complaint, the Vatican investigated the case by going through voice notes, photos, and videos López had sent to his 17 mistresses.
However, despite the accusations, López denied everything, calling it a defamation campaign by “dark hands”.
Before the lid was blown opened, López was also under investigation for allegedly embezzling church funds, just as he was accused of taking chairs from church property to use in a chicken restaurant chain called Patas Arriba (“upside down” or literally “legs in the air”), in which he had a financial interest.
The Vatican accepted López resignation early last month ahead of over 20 years in which bishops statutorily retire at age 75.
