The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has turned down a ₦120 million house gift offered to him in celebration of his 64-birthday anniversary.

He emphasised that his policy on birthdays should be opportunities dedicated to support impactful and charitable causes as against occasions for extravagant celebrations.

The former Governor of Anambra State, said that rather than accept the luxurious present, he prefers that the money should be used for a more meaningful cause.

He therefore appealed for the funds to be channeled into the construction of classrooms in three different educational institutions located in Agulu, Ekwulobia, and Abatete in Anambra State.

In the words of Obi; “Rather than give me a house, let’s use that money to build classrooms. My decision underscores my well-known stance on prioritizing public good over personal comfort”.

It was also gathered that it was in line with this policy of his that he also declined a ₦20 million birthday party and opted for the donation of 200 desktop computers to schools across Anambra.

Obi is widely recognized for his modest lifestyle and commitment to education and development just as he once revealed in 2017 that he owned only one wristwatch, which he had used for 17 years, and two pairs of black shoes.

On his 64th birthday, the Labour Party leader spent the day in Rome praying for Nigeria and its leaders.

Obi’s actions continue to reflect his core message of “leadership must be about service, sacrifice, and responsible governance”, with special focus on education, health, and poverty alleviation.
