BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – Some protesters on Tuesday blocked the entrance to the National Assembly in Abuja, demanding the reinstatement of suspended Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno south in the upper chamber of the federal legislature.
Senator Ndume was suspended last week by the Senate over lack of diligence before making spurious allegations against the President of the Senate Bukola Saraki and Senator Dino Melaye.
He had alleged that the Senator Saraki was involved in some shady deals over the importation of his Range Rover jeep with the Nigerian Customs Service just as he said Senator Melaye had no Degree certificate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Ndume, who quoted news reports specifically accused Saraki of importing a Range Rover SUV without paying appropriate import duty and attempting to clear the vehicle with falsified papers.
However, the Senate upon the report of its committee on Ethics and Petitions which investigated the allegations dismissed the two allegations and slam sanction on Ndume by suspending him for six months.
Since the suspension of Ndume, there have been moves by some politicians from Borno State led by Governor Kashim Shettima to get Senator Ndume pardoned and reinstated.
Some of the protesters that were at the National Assembly gate on Tuesday allegedly believed to have been sponsored by Ndume, carried placards with inscriptions; “Saraki is a curse”, “Reinstate Ndume Now” The Senate Must Not Deny Us Representation” among others.
Some of the protesters claimed that they are natives of southern Borno where Senator Ndume hails from and is representing but are residents of Mararaba and Masaka suburbs near Abuja.
