…Urges security agencies to be on the alert over rumours of protests
The chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Mr. Zach Adedeji, has cautioned Nigerians against being misled by misinformation surrounding the new tax laws in the country.
Adedeji particularly urged citizens to endeavour to study the new tax laws carefully in order to understand how the provisions affect them, as against relying on rumours or calls for mass action.
This was as he tasked security agencies in the country to be on the alert over rumours of protests against new tax laws.
Adedeji, who stated these on Sunday, January 4, 2026 when he featured on Arise Television, said that the only message he has for Nigerians is not to listen to rumours.
In the words of Adedeji; “Nigerians should analyse the data as it affects them. They should wait for the result, not mass or mob action”.
The NRS Chairman also said that calls for the suspension of the implementation of the tax laws are unconstitutional, stressing that laws passed by the National Assembly cannot be suspended by individuals or pressure groups.
According to him; “No individual, except in an emergency, can suspend the law. The law passed by the National Assembly is the law. The tax reform bills went through extensive consultations, including public hearings at the National Assembly for over six months, before their passage”.
While ruling out the suspension of the tax law, Adedeji insisted that only amendments can be made where grievances exist.
Adedeji further said; “Implementation has started. People have started to see the result, and they say they want to go on a protest.
“I am using this time to call all the security agencies to be on alert. The protests could not be coming from the poor, whom the reforms are meant to protect, but from unpatriotic individuals seeking to frustrate the benefits of the policy,” he said.
