BY AMEH IDUJAGI, JALINGO – No fewer than 16 housewives have been divorced by their husbands at Mutum Biyu village in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State for allegedly attending a PDP campaign rally.

According to a report by our correspondent, the wife of the Taraba State Governor, Mrs Anna Darius Ishaku, had on Monday invited women in Gassol LGA to the official residence of the council Chairman, Alhaji Yahuza Yayawu, to canvass votes for her husband, Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku, in the forthcoming elections.

It was gathered that both Christian and Muslim women, who attended the rally waited for several hours, and only returned home with packets of Maggi cubes and sachets of Omo detergent.

Sources said most of the women that attended the rally did so without the consent of their husbands who are said to be ardent supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the source, the women returned home late on Monday night only to be given their divorced letters by their husbands.

One of the affected housewives, Hadiza Tanko, told our correspondent in tears that she got the invitation from her friend who deceived her that the Governor’s wife had invited women in the local government to distribute food items, sewing machines and wrappers to womenfolk.

“My husband and I are supporters of APC. I only went there because of what the Governor’s wife was sharing, but got nothing after I waited for over eight hours.

“Now I have been given a letter of divorce. I did not tell my husband because he would not allow me to attend the rally. I pleaded for forgiveness, but my husband refused,” she lamented.

Another victim, Lami Tijjani, said she told her husband that reason she attended the PDP’s rally was just to get wrappers that were to be distributed by the governor’s wife, “but I came home disappointed with nothing to show. I know my husband would not have permitted me to go to the rally and that was why I didn’t tell him. I have pleaded with my husband to forgive me, but he has refused”.

Alhaji Tijjani Audu, who is an APC’s strong supporter from Gunduma village in Gassol LGA, told our reporter in Mutum Biyu on Monday that his wife disobeyed his earlier warning that she should stay away from the PDP’s rally.

“Since she disobeyed me by going to the rally, she is now free to go and  marry either Governor Ishaku’s wife or the PDP. For me, I am done with her and nothing will make me return her to my house” he vowed.
