A second half strike by substitute, Alex Iwobi was all Nigeria’s Super Eagles needed to book a place in next year’s FIFA World Cup finals slated for Russia.
In a hard fought battle by Coach Gernot Rohr’s men, the Arsenal of England star came to the party in the 73 minute with his wonder strike that send thousands of cheering spectators at Godswill Akpabio Stadium into wild jubilation.
The goal was Iwobi’s second international goal for Nigeria and the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory on Saturday, effectively dashed the boastful Zambians’ dream of making it to their first-ever World Cup finals.
In beating the Chipolopolo, Nigeria bagged all three points at stake and took its total haul to an unassailable 13 points as seven points amassed by the Zambians. With the currently standings, the Eagles’ last outing against Algeria in the group will be a mere formality.
This will be the Super Eagles’ sixth appearance at the global soccer fiesta. The previous outings were as follow:
- 1994 in USA
- 1998 in France
- 2002 in South Korea/Japan
- 2010 in South Africa
- 2014 in Brazil
Meanwhile, the reigning African champions, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon redeemed their bald battered image with a 2 – 0 spanking of their Algerian counterparts, the Dessert Warriors in the second match of the Group B qualifiers.
The Cameroonians scored in each half of the match played in Yaounde to condemn the Algerians to the bottom of the table with an embarrassing one point from five matches.
