BY EDMOND ODOK, ABUJA – The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has resumed duties with assurances that the Nigeria Police under his watch will be professional and untainted in their handling of this year’s general elections.

He said a level playing field will be provided for all the candidates and stakeholders in the electoral process, but everyone must operate within the ambit of the law.

Speaking after being decorated with his new rank by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, Adamu pledged that the Force will stick to the rules, saying; “We are professionals. We are going to stick to the rules. We are going to do the right thing; we will not go outside the ethics of our job to do things that are untoward. Everybody will be given level playing ground to play his or her politics.

“You have heard from the former IGP, adequate arrangement has been made to make sure that free, fair and credible elections take place in Nigeria. We are going to build up on the strategies put in place to make sure that we have hitch-free elections in the country.”

According to him, the Force will re-strategize and ensure that the numerous security challenges in the country are squarely tackled and addressed.

“We know that there are security challenges we need to tackle in the country. We know that there are issues of kidnapping, abduction and other security challenges”, the new Police boss admitted.

He however assured that from the strategies put in place by the former IGP, the Police will re-tool their operations for efficiency and effective mandate delivery to Nigerians going forward.

Adamu, who thanked the President for considering him worthy as the acting IGP, promised to discharge his duties professionally as the Police continuously work to strengthen their public engagement in the overall interest of the nation.

An Assistant Inspector General (AIG) before his appointment, Adamu, who is from Nasarawa State, was decorated with his new rank by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, accompanied by his predecessor, Ibrahim Idris.

Meanwhile, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in its reaction to Adamu’s appointment, urged him to commence the immediate rejigging of the Police to ensure effective service delivery by their officers and men.

The Party insisted that such re-tooling of the Force will restore professionalism and strengthen its adherence to the rules of engagement.
