2019: INEC Is Ready – Prof Yakubu
BY AMOS TAUNA, KADUNA – Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has announced the readiness of the commission towards making the 2019 general elections free, fair and credible.
Professor Yakubu, who gave the assurance at the 5ft Northern Traditional Rulers General Assembly in Kaduna with the theme “Pervasive Insecurity In An Election Year,” said that before Nigerian democracy can flourish, politicians need to be real democrats in playing the game of politics.
According to him; “Some of our politicians are not democratic and that is the reason why some of them cross from one political party to the other. INEC would continue to improve on its logistics to enable the commission have hitch-free elections come 2019.”
The INEC boss noted that conducting states elections are more difficult than conducting the general elections as the people’s attention would be focused on the state where the election is taking place.
He said there were improvements in the last Osun election as the voting materials arrived at the polling unit as early as 7:30 am and therefore promised to consolidate on that and ensure that the 2019 general election meet global standard.
