2019 UEFA Super Cup: It’s 1st All English Showdown!

  • As Liverpool Tackle Chelsea

The traditional curtains raiser for the UEFA club competitions’ season holds tonight with Champions League holders, Liverpool and Europa League winners, Chelsea lighting up hostilities at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul, Turkey

The match kicks-off at 21:00 CEST (22:00 local time) with both teams flaunting different confidence level. While Coach Klopp’s European champions got their Premier League campaign off to an impressive 4-1 victory over Norwich City,  Lampard and The Blues were not so lucky as they emphatically lost 0-4 to Manchester United in his first premiership match in charge.

Of interest in this showdown is UEFA’s history making appointment of Female French referee, Stéphanie Frappart to handle the proceedings. She will be assisted by Manuela Nicolosi and Michelle O’Neill, with Turkey’s Cuneyt Cakir as the fourth official. This is the first time that a female official will take charge of a major UEFA men’s competition event.

And looking ahead to the Chelsea challenge, Liverpool boss, Jürgen Klopp, told UEFA.com that; “I know how special Istanbul is for Liverpool and every supporter. Nobody will forget 2005, but we are different people, we aren’t the same; we are the 2019/20 team, a very good one too! Istanbul is a great place for football, I played here once for Dortmund and the atmosphere was brilliant.”

According to him, “There’s a big community of Liverpool supporters here in Turkey and that makes it special for us too. We are fresh, we want to play and hopefully we can make it a special place for this group too.”

On his part, Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, said; “I’m optimistic because I believe in the players and the fact that we are here in the final because we deserve to be. I’m very understanding of the quality of the opposition in Liverpool, the team that deservedly won the Champions League and who have a fantastic manager and group of players.”

Hoping for a positive result against Liverpool, the Chelsea legend further stated that; “If we play to our maximum we can win the match. It’s important as a club like Chelsea that we give everything as a club to try and win it. We certainly understand the importance of it.”

This is the first all-English UEFA Super Cup, though it is the fifth time in six seasons domestic rivals have met, and eighth time in all.

Liverpool are the last English side to win the UEFA Super Cup, getting the better of CSKA Moskva after extra time in 2005. Interestingly, four Premier League teams have lost in the fixture since: Manchester United (2008, 2017) and Chelsea (2012, 2013).

This is Liverpool’s sixth UEFA Super Cup; they won in 1977 and 2005 as European champions, and in 2001 as UEFA Cup holders. They lost (as European Cup holders) in the 1978 and 1984 games.

For Chelsea, this is their fourth UEFA Super Cup; they beat Real Madrid 1-0 in 1998, when they qualified as UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup holders, but have lost in two subsequent appearances: 4-1 to Atlético in 2012 and on penalties to Bayern München the following year.

Istanbul as venue for the match follows in the footsteps of Prague (2013); Cardiff (2014); Tbilisi (2015); Trondheim (2016); Skopje (2017); and Tallinn (2018) as cities to have hosted the UEFA Super Cup since the fixture switched from its long-term home of Monaco.
