BY EDMOND ODOK – Ahead of the Edo governorship election on September 19, 2020, the National Campaign Council (NCC) of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has vowed to ensure victory for its candidate and incumbent Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki.

The Campaign Council said with the electorate in Edo State desirous to consolidate on the democratic gains provided by their elective representatives, the path to victory for PDP is becoming more certain by the day.

Rising from its crucial closed doors meeting at Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the Council said after reviewing developments in Edo state, Governor Obaseki remains the candidate to beat at the poll.

The Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, who released a statement on behalf of the Council, said; “The election is already on the table for PDP. We have a sellable candidate, who is Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The statement said the meeting, presided over by the Chairman of the National Campaign Council and Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike, noted that “Nigerians are moving forward with democracy and we (PDP) have to deepen it together.”

Quoting Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is the Campaign Council Deputy Chairman, the statement said they would work with Edo people to deepen democracy, especially with Governor Obaseki being a pole ahead of other candidates in the race.

He said; “Technically, Edo is a PDP state because in the last election of 2019, we actually won all the elections. So, it is not coming as a surprise that Governor Obaseki has to shift his ground from APC to join us.

“Now, we are putting all the forces together, and there is nothing that’s left behind. So Edo is completely a PDP state and we are going in there to win the election.”

In his remarks, Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said Edo people were convinced that Governor Obaseki remains the best candidate in the gubernatorial race.

According to him, with the National Campaign Council giving the State Campaign Council the desired support, total victory for PDP is assured at the poll, adding; “Those of us from Edo state are very clear in our minds that our candidate, Governor Obaseki is definitely the best candidate that can deliver and sustain the PDP ticket and also take the flag of the party to Osadebe House.”

The Chairman emeritus of DAAR Communications, who said no stone will be left unturned in the battle to clinch the coveted seat, maintained that; “For the South-South, it is a great challenge and honour to ensure that the six states in the zone belong to PDP.

“So, every support has been pledged by the leadership of the party; the governors, members of BOT, the national working committee. They are committed to ensuring that the flag of PDP will continue to fly in Government House”.

Being the first since the 77 member National Campaign Council was inaugurated by the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) on July 7, 2020 in Abuja, the meeting was arranged to effectively strategise for the forthcoming poll.

The meeting had in attendance the Governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Mankinde.

Also present were other members of the NCC as well as Chairmen and Secretaries of all the sub-committees of Edo 2020.
