BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has challenged on tertiary institutions serving as Computer Based Test Centers for the conduct of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations to improve on their facilities to meet up with standards.

Oloyede, who stated this during an interview with the Voice of Nigeria (VON), while responding to issues from the Mock Examinations of the board conducted on Saturday May 9th, said the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), may need to re-access the facilities presented by some polytechnics in ascertaining their accreditation.

The JAMB Registrar also said that most of the facilities used for the mock exams by participating polytechnics were sub-standard.

Oloyede said; “I was at some of the polytechnics in Lagos State and I am not impressed at all. I wished the NBTE will have a second look at the facilities they present for accreditation. May be the NBTE is not aware”

“Some of the polytechnics I visited, do not even look like primary school. Some primary schools are better equipped than some of these polytechnics and worst still, they still say they are polytechnics. So, there is a need to have a look at some of the facilities these people presents for accreditation”.

He however, expressed satisfaction in the conduct of the mock examinations in other centers, saying though JAMB had to deregister a center in Lagos State due to system failure.

The JAMB Registrar, who monitored the examinations in Lagos and Ogun States, South-west Nigeria, called on stakeholders to learn from the mock examinations that is meant to test abilities.

A total of 175,000 candidates sat for the mock following the limited space available to candidates who indicated interest in the exams.

The 2022 UTME is scheduled to hold between May 6, and 16, 2022.
