BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Elder statesman and South-South political leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark says backing former Senate President,  Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki for the Presidency in 2023 will come easy if the South does not produce a consensus candidate for the nation’s highest political office.

Chief Clark, who described Senator Saraki as one of Nigeria’s best hands in leadership, said his heart goes out for Kwara State-born politician’s presidential aspiration because he has the prerequisite credentials to move Nigeria forward.

The 94-year-old Ijaw leader gave his candid view in Abuja during the visit of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Contact and Advocacy Council, headed by its National Chairman, Prof Iyorwuese Hagher, to intimate him of the former Senate President’s interest in contesting the 2023 presidential election

According to the former Federal Commissioner of Information, the need to present a credible candidate who understands the dynamics in every part of Nigeria is quite urgent and Senator Saraki falls within the category of those with all the good leadership qualities.

Clark, the leading light of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF),  also cited the sterling performance of Saraki in the 8th Senate but stressed that the Saraki project would only be on the table for him only if the Southern part of the country is not forthcoming with a credible consensus candidate for the presidential election.

He said; “We have been agitating for the presidency to be zoned to the south. However, if we fail to come up with a consensus candidate in the South, I will have no option but to support Dr Bukola Saraki.”

Speaking on its mission, the delegation stressed the need for national cohesion through the emergence of a presidential candidate who, over time, has shown character and competence to deliver on national issues.

In the Saraki’s team were Senator Solomon Ewuga, Senator Bello Adokwe, Hon Idem Unyime, Hon Moses Aliyu, and some other prominent PDP chieftains
