The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has said that the party’s policy of adoption of a consensus candidate for the 2027 elections is purely based on the agreement and full consent of all aspirants that indicated interest to contest for a particular position.
Prof Yilwatda, who stated the position of the party while speaking on the APC’s nomination process, stressed that consensus candidacy is not imposition, but must emerge from a voluntary agreement among all contenders seeking the party’s ticket.
The APC National Chairman insisted that any move to adopt a consensus candidate without the approval of all aspirants would be inconsistent with the party’s internal democratic principles.
According to Yilwatda; “The consensus arrangement is part of the ongoing political consultations and alignments within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections”.
Yilwatda stressed that the essence of the consensus policy is to promote unity within the party, insisting that such an arrangement must reflect the collective will of all the contestants in the race.
The APC National chairman’s clarification comes amid reports that some State chapters of the party are playing hide and seek with the forms by refusing to allow some interested aspirants access to the forms which is contrary to the policy of the party.
