The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), on Thursday, March 5, 2026, vowed that opposition political parties will boycott the 2027 General Elections if the National Assembly refuses to amend certain provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
IPAC specifically warned that if the concerns raised by political parties and key stakeholders are not addressed, the outcome of the elections would be rejected.
It pointedly declared that the results of such elections would be considered as illegitimate, thus would not in any material particular be recognised by the political parties under its umbrella.
IPAC’s position were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its Expanded General Assembly meeting in Abuja, in which it emphasised that some of the provisions in the newly enacted Electoral Act deliberately introduced issues that could undermine political party development and weaken Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
In the communiqué signed by Yusuf Dantalle and Maxwell Mgbudem, National Chairman and Secretary respectively,
IPAC listed six key demands that must be addressed through urgent amendments by the National Assembly.
The Council specifically demanded for the restoration of indirect primaries, stressing that political parties should retain the constitutional right to determine how they nominate candidates for elections.
IPAC also demanded the removal of the requirement for political party members to possess and upload their National Identification Number (NIN), stressing that such a provision could disenfranchise many Nigerians who do not have access to the identification system.
