Amid mounting speculations over the likelihood of throwing his hat into the ring for the 2027 presidential race, former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday night paid a surprise visit to the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark
Expectedly, the visit has added a new dimension to political calculations as forces continue to amass themselves against the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC).
Jonathan’s meeting with Senator Mark came few hours after the ADC held its First National Caucus meeting in Abuja, and adopted the new party as the coalition platform.
Though there has been no official statement to clear the air on purpose of the meeting, political pundits are already speculating it may be a re-invention of old friendship given the great and cordial working relationship between both leaders when Senator Mark was the Senate President during the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Many still applause Senator Mark’s leadership of the National Assembly for beating back pressure to fashion out by the ‘doctrine of necessity’ that paved the way for Jonathan to first assume office as Acting President during the crisis that trailed the ill-health of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
With attention fully turned to 2027 despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s half-hearted call for restrain on campaigns by political parties and individuals, members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have continued to openly make advances at wooing the former President to join the race and contest against President Bola Tinubu.
The former President will be entitled to only one term if he decides to join the race and is elected by Nigerians having already served a full term before losing to late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015
