…Asked to tender apology or face severe sanctions

Senator Orji Uzo Kalu and Hon Chris Nkwonta have attracted the ire of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State chapter following their public statements and actions ahead of the 2027 Governorship Election in the State.

For a start, the State working committee (SWC) of the APC has ordered the two federal legislators to either tender an unreserved apology to the party and supporters within two weeks or face sanctions.

It warned that it will not allow personal interests, political calculations or individual ambitions to undermine the collective aspirations of APC members and supporters across Abia State.

Senator Orji Kalu had during an interview on Channels Television said that Governor Otti will floor his opponents in the 2027 polls, just as Hon Chris Nkwonta had during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, publicly declared support for Governor Otti ahead of 2027 election.

However, a communique issued by the SWC dated August 10, 2026 and signed by the 17 members of the committee noted that the utterances of Senator Kalu and Hon Nkwonta in declaring support for Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 Governorship election were irresponsible, embarrassing, unstatesmanlike, and inimical to the unity, cohesion and electoral prospects of the APC.

While condemning the utterances of the two National Assembly members, the Abia State SWC of the APC insisted that the apology must demonstrate their commitment to the Party, its Constitution, leadership and the collective decision of the APC to present and support all of its candidates in the 2027 general elections, especially the governorship candidate.

The SWC warned that failure to comply with the demand within seven days will leave the party with no option than to constitute a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding their respective statements and actions and recommend the appropriate disciplinary measures to the relevant organs of the Party.

The communique further states; “Where found liable, the Party shall take whatever disciplinary measures as prescribed by the APC Constitution and other applicable party regulations, without fear or favour and irrespective of the status of the individuals concerned”.

The SWC also resolved that the party would withdraw its political support and privileges from the two legislators if their conduct is established to be inimical to the Party’s interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Abia State SWC made it abundantly clear that the APC is bigger than any individual, regardless of his or her political stature, adding that leadership comes with responsibility of upholding values and interests of the office.

The leadership of the Abia State chapter of the APC assured that it remains committed to the collective decision of its members and organs to strengthen the Party, support its candidates and work tirelessly towards winning the 2027 general elections and taking over the governance of Abia state.

It said; “At this critical stage of our preparations for the 2027 elections, all members, especially those occupying leadership positions, are expected to demonstrate discipline, loyalty, restraint and commitment to the Party”.

The APC enjoined its members to remain calm, focused and united, assuring that the party will continue to deploy all legitimate political and organisational mechanisms necessary to protect its integrity, defend its interests and win the governorship and all the legislative seats at the federal and state level in 2027.
