The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has the comments of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with regards to its April 14, national convention, where he reportedly dismissed opposition figures and described their gathering in unflattering terms, reflected a leadership disconnected from the realities facing the citizens.

This was as the ADC specifically raised concerns about the state of democratic institutions, accusing the Tinubu-led government of undermining the principle of separation of powers and weakening oversight structures.

The ADC therefore cautioned President Tinubu to brace for a potential electoral challenge in 2027, attributing growing public dissatisfaction to economic hardship and rising insecurity.

A statement on Friday by Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, argued that current conditions across the country had weakened confidence in the Tinubu-led administration’s policies.

The ADC noted that Nigerians are grappling with high living costs, food inflation, rising debt, and declining purchasing power, alongside persistent security concerns.

The opposition party stressed that these challenges should be the government’s priority rather than political exchanges with opposition groups.

It particularly rejected claims about the nature of its convention, insisting that it was not held in an inappropriate setting and alleging that the administration has limited access by the opposition to public venues.

The ADC noted that the inconsistency in Tinubu’s stance toward the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, suggesting recent moves to court his supporters contradict earlier criticisms.

It emphasised that worsening economic conditions and insecurity would shape voter sentiment ahead of the next general elections, saying that it is working to position itself as a credible alternative focused on governance, stability, and economic recovery.
