The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said the explosion that occurred near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) premises in the Maitama district of Abuja has no relationship with any bomb threat.
A statement released in Abuja on Wednesday said a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EODU) were deployed to assess the situation after the reported incident.
The statement signed by FCT Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, said preliminary findings indicate that an overheated metal refuse container activated under intense heat, exploded, and injured two of the refuse evacuators.
According to her, the affected refuse evacuators are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital, even as she advised members of the public to exercise caution and refrain from using metal bins for refuse disposal.
The Police Spokesperson also urged the public to rely more on the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, adding that these materials pose a reduced risk of being overheated when exposed o severe hot temperature. – With NAN reports
