Accountability And Transparency Are Catalyst To Economic Recovery – AGF Idris

BY GLORIA USMAN, ABUJA – The Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, has said that accountability and transparency are catalysts to economic recovery.

This is as he also said that the role of the Treasury and other Stakeholders is germane to the policy thrust of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Idris, who stated these at a National Treasury Workshop in Kano, therefore urged participants to appreciate accountability and transparency as well as remain a major watchwords for prudent financial management practices and a prerequisite for economic growth and development.

The AGF said the objective of the workshop is to promote accountability and transparency in all facets of the nation’s public, adding that the choice of the workshop is not by accident, but deliberate decision to stage the workshop in the most populous State with great economic resources, relevance and potentials that is Kano state.

While appreciating the co-participants, Idris said their participation has indeed simplified the arrangements for holding the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and therefore urged all at the workshop to strive towards identifying the challenges to accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.

Idris further said; “Improving the independent revenue based/profile of government; proffering revenue diversification for the government at all levels and cutting down the cost of governance in the most acceptable way.

“The National Treasury workshop has now become a veritable tool providing the needed platform for sharing quality information and knowledge that would help keep Nigerians abreast with public financial management reforms that can strengthen individual and collective capacities.

According to him; “This knowledge no doubt is of immense benefits to participants, as the respective agencies institutions that have nominated them.

The workshop had paper presentation by renowned resource persons in order to broaden participants’ perspectives on issues relating to accountability and transparency in the society.
