Some of the major streets in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital were on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 flooded by thousands of the supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, protested and demanded his immediate reinstatement as the governor of the State.

The supporters in their thousands that participated in one of the protests described as the largest so far took security agencies by surprise as the protesters stormed different streets in Port Harcourt and marched peacefully.

The protesters commenced their peaceful march from Aggrey Road in the Old Port Harcourt Township area, demanding for the immediate recall of Governor Fubara to his position as governor of Rivers State.

The protesters who dressed in black colour clothes to press home their demands, carried different placards with inscriptions such as, “We want our Governor Back” “We all voted for Fubara”, “Governor Fubara is the pride of Rivers People,” and “Together we stand for Governor Sim Fubara”.  The protesters expressed serious disappointment and anger over his suspension.

Clearly, the latest protest has further added to the growing tension in the oil rich State as they castigated the actions so far taken by the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibas (retd), who they accused of worsening the political crisis in the State.

They particularly questioned the rationale of Ibas dismantling the political structures put in place by an elected Governor, and putting in place structures that would further throw the State into more crisis.

Different protests have recently dominated the streets of Port Harcourt both for and against the State of Emergency in Rivers State with majority obviously against the emergency rule and the appointment of a sole administrator which majority argued was at variance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and also suspended Governor Siminalyi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and members of the State House of Assembly.
