Alleged Assault On Wife: Police Arrest Lawyer, Ekere Ebong
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one lawyer, Mr Ekere Sunday Ebong, 55, of Plot 40 L Line, Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo, the state capital.
The arrest followed a video that went viral in which the suspect (Ebong) was captured brutally assaulting his wife, and dehumanising her, leading to various grievous body injuries.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom State Command, SP Odiko MacDon stated that Ebong is a known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his spouse over the years.
The Police explained that as an Agency saddled with the protection of lives and property and maintenance of law and order, they cannot allow Ebong to continue his flagrant abuse of human rights.
The statement said that was why the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, acting on the advice of the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy ordered the arrest of the suspect to prevent murder and breakdown of law and order.
The CP therefore warned perpetrators of violent crimes in the State to desist forthwith and urged family members to endeavour to resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to violent attacks.
The Police spokesman said that Mr Sunday Ebong will have his day in court as soon as investigation into the matter is concluded.
