Alleged Disrespect: Bauchi Emirate Council Disrobes Senator Buba Of Title

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Following what it described as an act of disrespect to Governor Bala Mohammed, the Bauch Emirate Council has stripped Senator Shehu Buba Umar of his traditional title of Majidadin Bauchi.

The stripping of Senator Umar’s traditional title is coming barely a week after he publicly challenged Governor Mohammed, who is the Kauran Bauchi, over his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his policies.

Senator Umar is representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is in opposition in the state.

A letter conveying his being disrobed by the Bauchi Emirate Council on Wednesday evening, advised Senator Umar to stop using the traditional title henceforth since it has been withdrawn.

The letter dated August 14, 2024, written in Hausa and addressed to Senator Shehu Umar and signed by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate Council Secretary, said that the withdrawal of the traditional title followed a meeting of the Council held on Wednesday, 14th August, chaired by the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu.

It further explained that the meeting deliberated on the Senator Umar’s alleged misdemeanours and consequently resolved to disrobe him as a traditional title holder of the Emirate.

The Council specifically accused Umar of “disrespecting and humiliating Governor Bala Mohammed”, an action it noted was at variance with the teachings and culture of Bauchi Emirate Council.

Senator Umar penultimate week after flagging off the APC campaign for the local government elections, told journalists during a chat that Governor Bala Mohammed was short-changing the people of Bauchi State with regards to some palliative items sent to the state by the federal government.

Umar listed the palliatives to include rice, corn and fertilizer sent to the state for distribution to the people to cushion the effects of the economic hardship.

The lawmaker alleged that the items were sold out by the Bauchi State Government instead of being distributed freely to the people and therefore challenged Governor Mohammed to account for the items.

This will be the fourth time such action will be taken by the Emirate Council. The first was that of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, who was stripped of his traditional title of Jakadan Bauchi as well as Elder Stateman, Muhammad Bello Kirfi, who was disrobed as Wazirin Bauchi and former member of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Shehu Abdullahi, who was removed as Wakilin Birnin Bauchi.

All the stripping-off of the traditional titles were taken by the Bauchi Emirate Council after the former titleholders had public confrontation with Governor Bala Mohammed.
