- Keeps mum on Sen Ekweremadu
Beatrice, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, accused, alongside her husband, of trafficking a homeless boy into the United Kingdom (UK) for organ harvesting has finally been granted bail on stringent conditions by a London court.
The development is coming a month after the UK police held her and the husband on charges of alleged human trafficking and plot to harvest a kidney for their sick daughter.
The Court documents indicated that Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, together with her husband Ike Ekweremadu, 60, allegedly conspired to traffic 15 years old Ukpo Nwamini David to London from the streets of Lagos in order to harvest his organ.
Ike, a barrister and former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, and Beatrice, an accountant, appeared at the Old Bailey Court for a bail hearing having remained behind bars since then with their bail application rejected after making an appearance in court on July 7, 2022
On Monday, July 25, 2022, the Common Sergeant of London, Richard Marks, said the Court has freed Mrs Ekweremadu on stringent terms while denying same for Mr Ekweremadu.
In his ruling, Marks said; “The position is that I have granted bail to Beatrice, subject to some fairly stringent conditions, but I have refused bail to Ike.”
Prosecutors told the Court that they were not appealing the decision. Prosecutor Tim Probert-Wood had previously told the Court that the case involves ‘exploitation and the harvesting of an organ.’
However, the court did not immediately disclose the stringent terms set for Mrs Ekweremadu or when Senator Ekweremadu would be granted bail before adjourning the case to August 4, 2022.
