- Surprise Visit Rewriting Political Playbook
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – In a stunning move that has blindsided the nation’s political establishment and veteran watchers, former First Lady Aisha Buhari pulled off a surprise meeting with African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
As expected, the unannounced rendezvous has clearly sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, upending strategic calculations and igniting intense speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Seizing the political momentum, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took to X on Wednesday to reveal the strategic meeting with former First Lady, describing the encounter as “warm and deeply appreciated”.
Further speaking on the visit that has left many thinking about emerging signals on possible alliances ahead of the next political cycle, he said the meeting also highlighted the need for those seeking a better Nigeria to prioritise the welfare and future of Nigerians.
The ADC presidential candidate wrote, “Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari. Her visit was warm and deeply appreciated.”
He lamented that families across the country are facing increasing pressure from the rising cost of essential goods and services, including food, transportation, education and healthcare, saying: “Beyond the courtesies of the occasion, it was also a reminder of the urgent responsibility before all who seek a better Nigeria: to put the welfare, dignity and future of our people first.”
Atiku, who maintained that Nigerians deserved an economy that would provide opportunities and enable families to live with dignity and hope, said, “Across our country, families are being stretched by the rising cost of food, transport, education, healthcare and other basic necessities. Nigerians deserve an economy that rewards hard work, restores opportunity and allows every family to live with dignity and hope.”
The ADC Standard bearer further said building such a country would require collective efforts to ease the burden on Nigerians and restore hope, adding: “That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again. We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again.”
Competent sources claimed that up until now, Buhari’s inner circle had kept the former First Lady’s travel itinerary under strict lock and key, making her sudden appearance at the opposition leader’s camp a masterclass in the nation’s unfolding political theatre.
Though details of the rendezvous are a closely guarded secret, the optics alone have fundamentally upended Nigeria’s political landscape and triggered whispers of major realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
For now, the ruling ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has found itself completely off-balance, scrambling to decode hints on possible shift in alliances that could redefine the battle for the ballot box come 2027.
