- There’s need for old students to assist develop the school – Adefila
The Association of Mass Communication Graduates of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has mapped out plans for marking its 30th graduation anniversary on Friday, July 1, 2022, at the premises of the institution.
AMACOG 92, being members of the 1992 set of graduates of the formerly known Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, said the event would allow the old students to support the Department of Mass Communication of their alma mater in key areas.
A statement by the Chairman of AMACOG 92, Mr. Adekunle Adeshina, said that the members planned to unveil a television studio that the old students had renovated with modern equipment installed.
It said the presentation of the renovated studio is expected to be witnessed by the Acting Rector of the Institution, Mr. Adeoye Odedeji, the Head of Department, Mass Communication Department, Mr. Lekan Togunwa; and the Olota of Ota, Prof. Adeyemi Obalanlege, who is also a member of the association.
According to Adeshina; “We can’t allow 30 years of our graduation from the school to pass away unnoticed and uncelebrated. Many of our members have grown in their fields, but don’t forget that they started their tertiary education in this place.
“In this unique set, we have editors of national newspapers, publishers, general managers of radio and television stations, proprietors of broadcast stations, directors in both state and federal ministries, a first-class traditional ruler, and many outstanding professionals.
“We have renovated a television studio in the Mass Communication department and installed modern equipment which will aid the impartation of modern education and practical skills in contemporary media practice to the current and future students,” he said.
Adeshina said the one-day event would be rounded off with a dinner on Friday, adding that it would allow old coursemates to network and exchange ideas on how to move the association and the department forward.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Planning Committee of the 30th Graduation Anniversary of the 1992 set of the Association of Mass Communication Graduates of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Dr. Femi Adefila, has stressed the need for the old students to play active roles in the development of their alma mater.
Adefila said that the alumni associations could become the pillars on which the development of the nation’s schools would stand.
He said; “The economic situation across the globe is not favourable at the moment. Nigeria’s situation is particularly precarious. This has led to the schools, especially government schools, being sidelined in the allocation of scarce resources”.
Adefila, who is the Founder of RAVE FM, Osogbo, Osun State also said that the situation has placed a responsibility on old students to embark on a rescue mission by pulling resources together to support the schools in the areas of modern infrastructure and facilitating volunteers to help the students in bridging the gap in the impartation of critical knowledge.
He explained that this understanding informed the decision of AMACOG 92 to renovate the television studio of the Mass Communication Department of MAPOLY and install in the studio modern facilities that would aid the students in quality learning.
Adefila also said; “We were in the school five years ago to support the department in various areas as part of the need to reach out to our former school.”
