Anambra Govt Berates EFCC Over Obiano On Watchlist Story
- Says Commission went too far with four months to tenure ending
BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM, AWKA – The Anambra State government has slammed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over media reports that it has placed Governor Willie Obiano on the watchlist of persons with perceived skeletons in their cupboards
Reacting to information making rounds in the media about the governor’s movement being officially monitored, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba said with Governor Obiano still having about four months left to see off his eight years tenure, the anti-graft agency went too far by publicly announcing that he is currently under investigation.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, Adinuba said; “Governor Obiano has a whole four months to remain in office as the Anambra State chief executive. Nobody in Nigeria can circumscribe his constitutionally conferred immunity which shields him from both criminal and civil prosecution.”
The Commissioner said if not for the purpose of clear mischief, “The EFCC went too far to announce in November that it is observing him.
“We are not aware of any state governor who had up to four months to be in office and the EFCC went on to sponsor media reports that he was being investigated.”
Recently, information leaked in the media that the Commission had written a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) requesting the Service to place Governor Obiano on its official watchlist.
The anti-corruption agency further asked the NIS always avail it with information anytime the Anambra State chief executive is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit nationwide.
