Anthony Joshua Gets June 20 Date Against Kubrat Pulev
- At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
- ‘The Cobra’ is IBF’s mandatory challenge
- Fury vs Wilder 3 holds July in US
Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua will on June 20, 2020 defend his titles against Bulgarian opponent, Kubrat ‘The Cobra’ Pulev inside the 62,000-seat capacity Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Pulev, the IBF’s mandatory challenger, on Monday confirmed the fight with Joshua, who currently holds the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO World heavyweight championship belts.
“The contract is already officially signed,” the 38-year-old former European amateur super-heavyweight champion wrote on his Facebook page. “I am happy to be able to show the world how strong I am.”
Joshua, 30, beat Andy Ruiz Jr on points in a December rematch in Saudi Arabia to win back the world titles the Mexican-American took from him at Madison Square Gardens six months earlier.
Pulev, nicknamed “The Cobra”, had in 2014 challenged for the IBF world heavyweight title, losing against Wladimir Klitschko in Hamburg on a fifth-round knockout.
However, he pulled out of a scheduled meeting with the Briton in 2017 due to injury.
Joshua last fought in London in September 2018 when he beat Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium.
If Joshua beats Pulev, he could be in line for an all-British title unification fight against Tyson Fury, who only recently dethroned the WBC title holder, Deontay Wilder in a seven round TKO.
Meanwhile, Britain’s boxing promoter, Frank Warren said on Monday that a third fight between the new WBC champion Fury and Wilder is in the making and set for the United States (US) by early July,
Fury took the title in Las Vegas last month with a seventh-round stoppage of Wilder, who fought the Briton to a split-decision draw in their first meeting in December 2018.
According to Warren, he wanted Fury to fight Joshua next in a world title unification bout but Wilder has triggered off a rematch clause in their fight contract.
“He’s invoked the rematch clause so that is what we are working towards,” Warren told TalkSport radio.
“It’s contracted to take place in the States. That is in the contract and set in stone unless anyone agrees differently. But at the moment, it is due to take place in the US. It will take place by the end of June, early July – no later than that”, he said – The Guardian
