The Presidency says once President Muhammadu Buhari concludes consultations with the right people, it is possible for him to do what happened during the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) National convention that led to the emergence of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman of the ruling party.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity to the President, Mr. Garba Shehu, who stated this while speaking with the BBC Hausa Service, however, confirmed that Buhari is yet to announce his support for any particular candidate or region ahead of the presidential convention of the ruling APC slated to kick-start on Monday.

Shehu said President Buhari only advised the APC presidential aspirants to engage among themselves to allow for the selection of one person to represent the party in the 2023 General Election.

He pointedly said contrary to reports by some Nigerian media outlets that the president was backing the South, the President did not say so at any time.

In the words of Shehu; “This issue has not arisen. All he has to do is negotiate and get one person. He has shown that as a leader, he is ready to provide leadership to make that happen”.

He explained that the president only advised the APC presidential aspirants during his meeting with them on Saturday night at the State House in Abuja on the need for a common front.

Saturday night meeting with President Buhari witnessed the attendance of all the presidential aspirants on the platform of the APC, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and one of the Party’s leaders, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who on Thursday threw jabs at the President, saying that but for him, Buhari couldn’t have been President.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, President Buhari might announce his preferred candidate before the commencement of the Presidential Convention of the APC.
