Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at the Plateau Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, screened and cleared by the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee ahead of the party’s Governorship primaries for the 2027 general elections.

With the clearance, Governor Fubara is now set to contest the APC governorship primary scheduled for May 21, 2026.

Governor Fubara was among three serving governors whose credentials were verified and assessed by the committee.

Fubara, who has been locked in a protracted political feud with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had obtained his APC Expression of Interest and Nomination forms through proxies.

A coalition of Rivers APC stakeholders and elders, led by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, had purchased and donated the forms to Governor Fubara urging him to contest the Governorship election for a second term, stressing the need for continuity and development of the state.

The move however, further heightened the political tension in Rivers State as Wike and his loyalists reportedly opposed the move, saying that there was an agreement that Fubara would not contest for a second term in office.

Also, a key ally of Wike, who is the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Kingsley Chinda who is a known member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday appeared before the APC Governorship Screening Committee for screening.

The APC Governorship primaries is scheduled to hold on May 21, 2026 while that of the National and State Assemblies primaries is expected to take place around mid-May.
