The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has reacted to the viral video showing a female student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Miss Precious Mbakwe, physically assaulting a lecturer after he interrupted her video recording.

The incident, which went viral on social media platforms, led the management of the University (UNIZIK) to set up a disciplinary panel.

The decision and recommendation of the panel led to the Precious Mbakwe’s expulsion, a decision that has now been applauded by ASUU.

ASUU UNIZIK chapter in a statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrade Kingsly Obaoji and Joseph Onyejiaka respectively, commended the lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, for his maturity and professionalism in handling the situation.

It described the reaction of Dr Okoye as a testament to his character and a reflection of the values expected of academic staff.

The UNIZIK chapter of ASUU also praised the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr. Joseph Ahamefuna Ikechebelu, for taking swift and decisive action against the student, thereby reinforcing the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and a conducive learning environment.

The letter read in part; “The Academic Staff Union of Universities wishes to commend Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye for his exemplary display of maturity and civility in the face of the recent violent assault on him by a female student, Precious Mbakwe, of the Department of History and International Studies.

“ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of its members while ensuring that universities uphold the highest standards of discipline and academic integrity,” it said.
