ASUU: State Universities Mull Pulling Out

BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – Disagreement has continued to trail the ongoing National Executive Council meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities presently holding in Abuja.

A Source at the ASUU NEC meeting told Forefront News that some members are calling for the suspension of the strike just as members from State owned Universities are considering pulling out of the main Union.

The ongoing NEC meeting of ASUU is expected to review its over six-month old strike that has kept students and lecturers away from classrooms.

NEC members of the Union converged at the National Secretariat of the Union on Sunday to begin deliberations on issues pertaining to it demands.

A member of the ASUU NEC confided on our correspondent that the meeting did not finish deliberation on Sunday thus would continue today being Monday, August 29, 2022 with a view to further harmonise the key concerns of the Union.

He however said that one of the major point is the fact that ASUU NEC is not ready to accept the ‘no work no pay policy’ of the federal government as it cannot apply to teaching hence the delay in arriving at a consensus on calling off of the strike.

The leadership of ASUU met with the Prof. Nimi Briggs renegotiation committee two weeks ago where the Union said that the government did not come up with any new offer.

The committee however pleaded with ASUU to suspend the industrial action, assuring that their concerns will be included in the 2023 budget.
