Bandits Abduct Dangote Cement Staff In Edo State

Scores of Dangote Cement workers were on Monday ambushed and abducted by gunmen at Okpella in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo state

According to the spokesperson for Okpella Cement Plc, Michael Odofin, who confirmed the attack, the company’s workers were returning from work and heading back to the Okpella community in a Coaster bus when the attackers struck.

In his reaction, Odofin said; “I cannot give any details right now because the incident is still fresh and no one knows exactly the state of affairs. For now, there is no report of casualty in terms of death apart from the injuries sustained by some of the workers”.

Reports indicated that the gunmen had laid ambush after the close of work and suddenly emerged from the nearby bush, forcing the bus to a halt before whisking the victims away.

An insider in the Okpella community who confirmed the unfortunate incident said; “It is unfortunate from what we have heard so far of this incident. After closing from work, the workers were in a Coaster bus returning to Okpella when the suspected bandits struck from nowhere. However, for now, it is difficult to know the number of the workers that were abducted on the spot”.

Some eyewitness accounts indicated that the criminal elements also injured several workers during the attack but could not immediately give the number of those wounded or the severity of their injuries at the time of filling the report.

One of the witnesses narrated the incident to some reporters thus; “The bandits took the workers by surprise. Some of the fleeing workers are still in the bush while others sustained injuries from either the bandits’ bullets or in the process of scampering for safety”.

Efforts to confirm the incident from the Police Command proved unsuccessful as the Commissioner of Police In Edo State, CP Finsho Adegboye, and the Command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, could not easily be reached.
