Deadly armed men on Monday night, June 15, 2026, invaded the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), situated in Kuru, near Jos, the Plateau State capital and attempted to breach the security architecture of the institution.
During the invasion by the gunmen, two soldiers and a police officer were reportedly killed before security forces took positions and successfully repelled the deadly attack which commenced at about 11:00 p.m.
It was gathered that the deadly armed men made spirited attempt to force their way into the institute’s residential quarters where course participants were lodged.
A dependable source said the slain police officer was an orderly attached to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police while two soldiers died in the exchange of fire that followed.
However, security operatives stationed at the institute mounted strong resistance against the invaders and successfully block them from having access to the participants wing of the institute.
Information pieced together indicated that there was no participant that was abducted as the security forces frontally repelled the bandits before they could go near the residential area reserved for course participants.
In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the management of NIPSS confirmed that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the Institute in the early hours of today (Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
The statement issued by Dr. Osime Samuel, Head of Public Affairs of the Institute, stated that the situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
Samuel said; “There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled”.
The statement further said that investigations into the unfortunate incident have commenced, stressing that it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope, or outcome of the event.
NIPSS particularly said that it could not confirm details circulating on social media, thus urged members of the public and the media to rely on official communications from the Institute and relevant security agencies.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the motive behind the attack; however, security has reportedly been reinforced around the institute as investigations and manhunt operations commenced.
