BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Amid a vibrant, carnival-like atmosphere, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi took his vision for a reformed Nigeria to the heart of the Niger Delta, turning a massive political homecoming into a launching pad for a sharp critique of the current administration.

Addressing a surging crowd of ecstatic supporters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Obi transformed the grand celebration honoring Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the NDC’s National Leader, into a powerful policy showcase, drawing a stark line between his governance model and prevailing federal practices.

Speaking directly to key stakeholders in the riverine communities of the State, the NDC flagbearer did not hold back, explicitly criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s domestic governance record and frequent foreign travels.

He contrasted the current administration’s leadership style with his own proposed policy platform, promising alternative, hands-on economic and administrative strategies designed to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges directly from the home front.

The former Governor of Anambra State also noted that after more than three years on the saddle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not considered it appropriate to spend even one night in Bayelsa State, despite spending over 260 days abroad.

With an offer of direct commitment to regional engagement, the NDC Standard bearer said, “I assured our numerous supporters and the people of Bayelsa State that this will not happen under my leadership. I will visit Bayelsa to hear directly from our people and respond to their concerns.”

Pledging Regional Port Decentralisation

Shifting focus to economic development, Obi addressed the maritime and commercial viability of the Niger Delta. Decrying the systemic underutilisation of coastal economic corridors, he committed to a decentralised port expansion strategy.

“In Bayelsa, I pledged that we would begin efforts to upgrade ports throughout the Niger Delta, including those in Warri, Port Harcourt, and Calabar,” Obi announced.

Further pledging to accelerate stalled regional projects, Obi said: “We will also begin construction of the long-delayed Ibaka seaport in Akwa Ibom State and establish a new port in Bayelsa State to serve our riverine communities and the broader Niger Delta more effectively.”

While also reaffirming his broader national policy framework, Obi said national security, anti-corruption enforcement, and heavy capital investments in human capital, specifically healthcare and education, remain prerequisites for pulling citizens out of poverty.

Ultimately, the political discourse and engagement in the Riverine state dissolved seamlessly into a grand symphony of traditional festivities when Obi stepped into Toru-Orua, the picturesque Sagbama hometown of Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

As politics and culture struck a convergence in romance, the visiting delegation was treated to a mesmerizing showcase of local heritage, culminating in a spirited canoe war game and a vibrant boat regatta that danced across the community’s winding waterways.

Moved by the breathtaking display and the profound sense of community, Obi poured glowing praise to the party’s organizers before showering his host with parting congratulations.

Hear him, “I congratulate my dear brother, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, on his successful return home”, even as he also expressed deep gratitude to the party saying: “I appreciate our party’s national and state leadership, members, as well as the good people of Bayelsa for their impeccable organization, warm reception, and this monumentally successful event.”
