Bishop Kukah To Deliver Unical’s 36th Convocation Lecture
BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Bishop of Sokoto Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, Mathew Hassan Kukah has been chosen as the Special Guest by the University of Calabar (UNICAL) authorities to deliver the institution’s 36th Convocation Lecture on Thursday, March 21, 2024.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, who addressed a pre-convocation media briefing to kick off the week-long activities marking the ceremony, disclosed that the highly respected clergy would speak on the theme “Harmonising Diversity for National Development”.
Prof Obi explained that the choice of Bishop Kukah was based on his pedigree as an erudite scholar of international reckoning and a nationalist of no mean repute.
According to her, the University has lined up about 8415 graduates to receive various diplomas and degrees at this year’s Convocation ceremony.
She further explained that the certification ranges from Ordinary diplomas, First degrees, Masters, and Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D., adding that the list includes 32 First-class graduates.
The Vice-Chancellor also used the occasion to highlight other activities lined up for the occasion, including the first-ever staff Meritorious Service Award for 163 beneficiaries.
She informed journalists that the Service Award was introduced to promote and celebrate effective service delivery by the University’s workers and enhance their commitment to duty.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mmama is also scheduled to commission various TETFUND projects, including three lecture pavilions and two residential hostels, as part of activities to mark the 36th UNICAL Convocation ceremony.
