BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in Cross River State, Senator Sandy Onor has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to maintain absolute neutrality in the forthcoming general elections in the State.

He said with the elections fast approaching, it has become imperative for INEC and all security agencies to engender trust and confidence in the minds of the electorates by the actions and utterances of their officials.

According to him, anything to the contrary would not augur well as such may lead to chaos with the resultant breakdown of law and order in the State.

Prof Sandy Onor, who addressed a press conference in Calabar, the Cross River capital on his party’s preparedness for the forthcoming elections, said in the nation’s march towards a democratic change of leaders, INEC has a sacred duty of assuring the electorates of its readiness to conduct free and credible elections.

He said in the country’s overall interest, the electoral Commission and security agencies must, without any iota of doubt, pass the integrity test as impartial umpires and the people’s conscience keepers

The PDP flag bearer however took a swipe at INEC over what he described as its offhanded handling of the alleged discovery of sensitive electoral materials, like Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) in the Government House, Calabar, cautioning that such development, whether real or imagined, should not have been allowed to take place at all.

On his chances of being elected the next Governor of Cross River State, Professor Onor said having gone round the state to meet with the electorate, especially at the grassroots, the PDP is hopeful of a good showing that will see it claiming victory at the polls.

For him, the opposition party’s confidence is further boosted by the enthusiasm and warm reception accorded the team everywhere they visited during the campaign tour.

The PDP candidate however sympathised with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the deplorable condition of its Press Centre where members converge to carry out their job daily.

He promised to renovate the Centre and provide the Union with modern communication gadgets, including a brand new bus within three months of his assumption of office as the State Governor.

Onor, who currently represent Cross River Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, labelled the Governor Ben Ayade-led administration as a fraud whose activities are designed to hoodwink unsuspecting and gullible electorate into believing that they will enjoy safe ride on a fantasy-style governance.
