  • Candidates woo Triennial Confab delegates

BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Cross River State will be going to the polls on Saturday, July 16, 2022, to elect new officers at the Council’s triennial delegates conference in the State.

The campaigns are already on with the Comrade Sam Egbala-led three-member credentials committee releasing the final list of cleared candidates and giving them the green light to flag off their campaigns and woo voters for the elections.

Expectedly, all the candidates are crisscrossing the various Chapels in the State canvassing votes from journalists, with assurances of delivering on their campaign promises to rebuild the union for effective service delivery and improve members’ welfare now renting the air.

Slugging it out for the Chairmanship position are the State Editor of The Nation Newspaper, Comrade Nsa Gill of the Correspondent Chapel, and the Weekend Editor of the state-owned Nigerian Chronicle Chapel, Comrade Oka Ibor

Speaking with Forefront on his chances of emerging victorious at the polls, one of the Chairmanship candidates, Comrade Nsa Gill pledged to run an all-inclusive administration by creating a harmonious Union atmosphere where members would experience a sense of belonging as opposed to the current situation where segregation and divide and rule remain the order of the day.

Comrade Gill, who is flying his chairmanship ticket on the platform of HARMONY 2022, also promised to create an online media platform where retired colleagues would feel free to continue plying their trade.

On his part, Comrade Oka Ibor of the GREATER TOGETHER platform is preaching the message of transparency, fairness, cohesion, and robust socialization, urging members to support his mission of promoting participatory administration for a disciplined and respected profession.

In other positions up for contest, Judex Okoro of the Correspondent Chapel and Solomon Azu of the Nigerian Chronicle Chapel will be going up against each other for the post of Secretary while Veronica Ogar of Information Chapel will face Archibong Bassey of NTA Chapel for the post of Financial Secretary.

However, the contestants that are going unopposed include; Achiane Adams of Information Chapel – Treasurer; Kingsley Ayim also of Information Chapel – Assistant Secretary; with the post of Auditor to be filled through bye-election as no one showed interest at the close of sales of forms.

The credentials committee had, in a meeting with the contestants, given the nod for campaigns to commence, while the manifesto night has been slated for Friday, July 15 ahead of the elections on Saturday, July 16, 2022
