Capsized Canoe: Seven Month Old Baby, 4 Women Drown In Jigawa
BY SALISU IBRAHIM- A seven-month old baby and four women have been confirmed dead following a canoe that capsized in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The unfortunate incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer for the State’s Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu in Dutse on Wednesday.
DSP Shiisu said the unfortunate incident which took place at about 6:00pm on Tuesday witnessed the death of four women and a child on board of a canoe from Nguru Yobe State to Adiyani village in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Shiisu further said; “Unfortunately, the canoe capsized close to their destination. The driver managed to escape alive while the passengers drowned”.
The police spokesman said that local divers in the area immediately swung into action to rescue the passengers but could only recovered their corpses which were taken to Adiyani health facility and were certified dead by a medical doctor.
Shiisu gave the names of the deceased as Oneyaniwura Kasagama – 50, Lafiya Bulama – 40, Badejaka Kasagama – 40, Gimto Kasagama – 40 and Mai Madu Bulama, a seven month old baby.
Shiisu also said that all the victims were residents of Adiyani village, adding that investigation into the case had commenced.
