BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd) has begged Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for greater commitment in supporting and catering for widows and orphans of Nigerian fallen heroes.

This is as he also lauded the great works being done by some NGOs in rendering care and support for the group of citizens with needs.

Speaking at the Ministerial press briefing on the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations at Abacha Hall, National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, General Magashi said; “We appreciate the works of some Non-Governmental Organisations that have catered for these categories of citizens.

“It is expected that more of such organisations will rise to the challenge of addressing the needs of these special citizens.”

According to him; “The efforts of the services at the providing scholarship for the eligible children of their personnel who died in active service up to tertiary level can be augmented by corporate organisations operating in Nigeria to capture dependents outside the official coverage net. This can be considered as a worthy Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.”

He however charged the media to adequately cover activities marking the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.

The Minister said it was important for the media to promote programmes projecting the sacrifices made by Nigerian veterans and heroes for peace, security and development of the nation.

Equally, he said the media must not relent in encouraging and advancing activities that demonstrate patriotism among Nigerian youths for the overall good of the country.
